What size battery do I need to start my 1990 20hp Johnson? I currently have a Deep Cycle Group 24 now, it came with the rig, but I know it is overkill and puts a lot of weight in the stern. Any input is greatly appreciated.

A group 24 starting battery is all you need. The Deep cycle batteries are good for long periods using a trolling motor, etc. A deep cycle isn't needed for starting a 20hp motor.

I'd say a 525 MCA group 24 battery would do you fine.

Thanks for the reply, but maybe I should of phrased my question differently, what is the smallest size battery I can use to start my 20hp Johnson? I want to eliminate some of the weight in the stern. Thanx for any info.
