I was given a 1974 BW Montauk 17 a month ago. It has a Evinrude 1975 70 on it now but one cylinder is done...zero compression.

I can get a 1988 Johnson 120 VRO for free but know that a 120 might be a bit much weight wise and hp wise.

Any thoughts would be helpful and appreciated. New to the boat game!

My brother has a 1979 montauk 17 with a 115 on it. He loves it.

The weight on his optimax is not an issue on his boat.

Does that free motor run well? Have engine harness, and.controls.that fot the boat? If so, since the boat was free, id go.with a.free.motor.

Learn.to boat the way you want, and the ins and outs, then.consoder if.its wprthit to you and.your family.to put money into.a new or used motor.

Boat was given to me by a family member who didn't use/want it anymore b/c of age. The Johnson 120 I can get is also from a family member. Used the boat the motor is on myself last summer w/out issue. Started up right away and ran great. It has controls, gauges, etc. His boat was damaged (not me) and it's been sitting in his driveway.

Well, with my funds, an lifestyle, id go with the free 120.

An i think you will be good.

You may not even have to spend more then 50 bucks to install it, yiu need sealant some.bolts unless you clean.the ones mounting it now, and mayne a set up throttle cables.

Rigging will be easy since everything is alrrady connected to the motor. You can easily unplug an plug without knowing.

An im sure u have a friend with a winch or.rigging gear if nit, a rope and a tree work wonders.

I would try to find an engine that doesn't require an external oil injection tank, and avoid all of that rigging clutter. The Montauk was not design for an external oil tank engine.

365lbs for a 20 inch based on my research, which is mostly done by others.

And an extra hose running through the rigging tunnel won't matter especially if you use a rigging tube to hide all that non sense into one tube which stops right at the aft rigging tunnel.

You can also kill the vro, and go premix, which wont fail you if you can do math and remember when you add gas, you add oil.

Im not saying the vro is a bad system, im saying if you don't want the tank, then kill the vro alarm, cut the hose, clamp it, and premix.

I also know of someone here on this forum with a 140 HP Suzuki 4 stroke on his same era 16 boat (don't remember model)

I have also seen a 90hp on a 15 sport, so people do push things to the max, and survive.

You could very well be right about that weight, jw0287. I just googled for the specs and took the first legit looking number that popped up. You're also right about a lot of people overpowering their boats, I being one of them with a 50 Honda on a 13 foot Whaler but all in all I think I would be much happier with less water coming over the transom into the motor well. I would bet that PNWhaler would be too.
