The Helm unit of my steering gave out. Its the direct cable mechanical type of system. You could sort of hear the gears miss inside. The cable seems fine, and the engine portion moves very smoothly. I did some research and it looks like the Tele-Flex Safe-T QC Rotary is the right model. I removed the old unit, and the old cable end that fits to the old helm unit, was a threaded connection. It had a die cast collar. The new helm unit does not have that threaded connection.

I think that if I "break" loose the theraded collar, it may expose the cable end that fits the new unit, but am worried that if I "break" it, and for reason I need it, then I have to replace the whole cable with new.

Any advice out there.

You would have been better off buying the entire unit which consists of the helm and a newer style cable.
Not that much more then just the helm unit by itself.

$129 for the complete unit here:

Now you may need to buy a new cable anyway.
Look at Teleflex online.

Yeah, but its not just the initial cost, its threading the cable thru and dealing with now both ends of the cable. It would seem to me that the old die cast collar probably did not come with the original cable .... but I cannot seem how I would get it off without prying between the die cast seam.
I have good photos, but how do I post those?

I got it to work. Case closed. The old part just needed to be "sprung" and then the old cable snaps into the new helm unit, and its done. Screws were all different, the keyway needed to be grinded, but all in all a perfect match.

It sounds like you already had the newer cable and just needed to remove the adapter so you could snap the newer cable into the newer helm.

The older style cable I don't think would work no matter what you would have tried.
Is this what you pulled off of your cable?

If so, it sounds like someone replaced the older cable with the newer style already and had to use that adaptor.
Glad you got it fixed properly I hope as steering is a safety must.
