Thread subject: Whaler Central - Boston Whaler Boat Information and Photos :: Couple more quick questions

Hello again :-)
Just about ready to water test my boat, but have a couple additional questions.

1. While sanding around motor mounts, a small piece of the bedding material chipped away. This led me to think it was brittle. Should I have my motor re-bedded or can I add sealant around mount bolts? Any idea of costs to have this done?

2. The PO told me he kinked the fuel line. Looking at the fuel line from the portable tank, the line has been kinked near the fitting. Can I just cut off about 3" of hose and re-connect to fitting or should I buy a new fuel line and bulb kit? This line is the newer material rated for ethanol.

Should get my new 8" rollers and brackets in tomorrow to get the trailer set up correctly. Hopefully water test next week.

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Best regards,
Doug

#1 The sealant for the motor mounting bolts is important where the bolt and transom meet. Under the washer or bolt head area is key.

If the sealant is dried out, I would add a small layer for added protection and add resealing the bolts for the Fall to-do-list. You can remove 1 bolt at a time, no motor removal necessary. I would do it yourself. It is so easy, a yard would mess it up.

2) Yes, cut and reinstall the fitting. Use stainless clamp. Is the hose recent? Alcohol resistant? If it is a grey color, replace in the fall.

Thanks much Phil,
That's what I'll do.
I know some of these questions seem lame, but never owning a boat I don't want to assume what I don't know.

The hose is Gray and says approved for Alcohol blends. I'll cut that kink out so as not to have it kink on me, then I'll replace the whole shooting match this fall.

Good advise on the motor mounts. Never thought of one bolt at a time, I figured you couldn't get the old stuff cleaned out.

I have used the search function a great deal and appreciate everyone's time to advise.

Best regards,
Doug

The grey line you speak of is marine/sun rated. A friend of mine used it and the walls are somewhat flimsy (squeeze it with your fingers) . He works for the for Water District and replaced it for their boats because siphon from the fuel draw crimped the tubing. I (and he) are installing marine grade motor fuel intake black hose.

Garris,
Sounds like it's best I just stop by my Johnson dealership and purchase a new fuel line kit. I think I priced them at $60.

Thanks for the heads up.
