Well, I sold my 1972 Katama and bought a 1990 Newport. I've now been out a few times dialing it. When I got it the motor was mounted all the way down and I couldn't get it over 3500-maybe 4000 RPM. I've since raised it all of the way and I'm at about 5500 and 44MPH. A much newer and nicer boat with an Etec 90 that only had 20 hours on it! My older 1992 88SPL was a strong motor but the confidence just wasn't there. If I need to crank the new Etec more than 1 second for it to start, I think it's broken. Going from a non smirked to a smirked hull I can see a difference in dryness but over all they're pretty close. I can see a long boating summer here in Mass.
Happy 4th weekend everybody!
Steve

Oh, and I forgot the fuel economy. Amazing. I'm still using the fuel that came with the boat in the 2-10 gallon tanks. That would have been gone in the old 88 SPL on the first 2-3 rides out.
