Where would one find the stenciled hull number on a classic whaler...1969......the boat has been painted over...and badly....just want to find this stencil, but need to know where to start

Most 17' and smaller Classic Whalers had the stencil number embeded in gelcoat on the inside of the transom below the engine.
Here is a photo of my prior Montauk. You can see the black stencil numbers below the engine.

my hull # is stencil in the front "bait" well...might try checking there
