Hi - this is my first time posting but have been pouring though all of the info on this site since I purchased my 1972 Outrage 21' almost one year ago a week from today from an "estate sale" in St. Pete. Solid boat and all original parts with a 1979 Johnson that was shot. I re-powered it with a rebuilt Yamaha 200 VMax and have had a blast with it for the past year. I have just started researching the restoration process and have had a few "interviews" with some local repair yards as I plan to have it taken down to glass and re-gelcoated. Unfortunately this is not a process that i have the time or skill for and will have to resort to a professional restoration with respect to all of the fiberglass work. I do however plan to strip the hull down and provide as many hours possible with the sanding to cut down on some of the cost. All of that being said, I am looking for any recommendations for yards that i should consider for the project that would be within reasonable driving distance from Sarasota. I would like to feel like i have exhausted all reasonable options prior to picking a horse. Thanks in advance - Ed

Ed - Based on your stencil number I think you have a ribside outrage. you must share pictures!

I am doing something similar right now with my 1971 Boston Whaler Ribside - just on the east coast in Merritt Island. We have a member on here - James - who has a friend who does amazing boat restoration work. I believe they are in the Tampa Bay area - it may be worth reaching out to them.

Thanks Scott - it is a ribside. Built in Norwell and sent to Smith Marine in Severna Park, MD 5/11/1972. The previous owner had a fair amount of original materials that he gave me such as the original brochure from Smith Marine, BW Owner's Info booklet, Options & Replacement Parts booklet and even the original canvas placement diagram.

I have been following your progress and hope to post some pics soon in current condition before i start any work. I head to Canaveral occasionally for work, maybe we could meet up on one of my trips over so i can see how your progress is coming along.

Scott - are you doing your own fiberglass restoration work or outsourcing it? if outsourcing, how much needs to be done and what was the ball park estimate range - if you don't mind sharing.

I had a chance to get up to St. Pete yesterday to see how the restoration was coming along. It looks like i should be back in the water in 6 weeks or so. I started last week on the wood (the part of the project i am doing myself).

I was wondering if anyone has diagrams for the forward hatch cover and the additional platform just aft the hatch cover. I have been able to pull some good pics from this site but couldn't find one showing the underside of the additional platform which, looks pretty simple to make up. The hatch cover is a bit more complex and i still have the original but it is pretty weak. Maybe i will just add some support to the hatch cover i have.

I had to make a new teak forward platform for my ribside, shown here. It is an exact copy of the original, but stronger (uses 4/4 decking) and better detailed, in my humble opinion!

I have a complete dimensioned drawing of it which I could send to you if interested, and which includes the support beams on the underside.

Both the center console and the locker cover are made from teak flooring strips, readily available from Jamestown Distributors. They also sell the teak deck white caulking required. If you have some carpentry skills, you should be able to reproduce yours using this material. I believe Mike at Nautical Lumber also makes them to order.

The last photo also shows the new teak side supports installed for the forward platform. In addition to these, only a short 7/8" SS tubing support is needed on the aft cross beam, which can be seen in the first photo.

I have a glass insert for a 1974 Outrage 21 for what might be called the sleeping deck. I know many have built them from wood and are beauties. However if you are looking for the original glass insert, I have one with all lumber asembledge.

Just as a point of general information, the 1971 & 1972 "Ribside" models were only offered with the teak Forward Platform. For the 1973 and later Outrage 21 "smoothside" models, the teak platform was discontinued in favor of the fiberglass platform insert.

Also the 1973 models were the first to use the Desert Tan interior gelcoat. The 1971 and 1972 Ribside models used a grayish off white gelcoat color, which as far as I know remains unnamed, with a lost color code. So the 1973 and later fiberglass deck insert would not match the gelcoat color of the Ribside models.

sorry - been so long since i've checked in. Thanks for the offers Finnegan & Reel Easy. Finnegan, if the offer still stands would you please email me the drawings for the teak forward platform? I was able to rebuild and reinforce the hatch cover and it looks great - still need to caulk it. Went to visit the hull this morning and drop off some parts. should be done by end of month.

Also - Does anyone have a thought on sourcing an original bow eye replacement? the aftermarket eyes are not the exact size and shape. The original has the thread welded into eye whereas the aftermarket parts have an open thread hole. thanks in advance.

I would also like to see the plans. Larry, please send to me if you can. I’m restoring a 1972 Ribside that does not have the teak deck.
