I just recently purchased a 1974 13' boston whaler with the original cable and pulley system. ive realized its pretty difficult to find replacement pulleys these days so i've decided that the teleflex system is the better way to go. i would like to know what is the most simple and least expensive system i could go with that works and everything i will need to make it work. right now my whaler is powered by a 1989 28hp 2 stroke evinrude spl electric start (no other features besides that) the cable and pulley system is attached to a bracket on the front of the motor right now. the steering wheel is already sitting at 20 degrees so i guess someone has already switched it from the original flat bezel. i'm just a little confused at what i need because ive seen a lot of different stuff online and i figured someone on here with knowledge could help.

thanks,
neil friesz

I believe the length that your Teleflex cable would need to be is 11 feet. Also you'd need a new steering helm as well.

Depending on how you rig the steering cable to your motor, there's a chance you'd need a steering stand off bracket too.

Neil, I just did this on mine. See this thread: http://www.whalercentral.com/forum/vi...ost_122830

The only thing to consider that may be different from my setup is how far fwd the helm is located. I will measure this for you in a week or so. You will probably still need to purchase a new bezel. The one you have on there now probably will only work with the cable & pulley helm. The kit comes with a flat one so you can test it and see if it will work. I ordered one since it was only $30.

the only thing that is still a little confusing to me is actually how the steering will mount up to my exact engine, what parts not included in the kit will i need to buy. do i need the support tube, clevis kit and stand-off bracket? ive included a couple pictures of my engine so u could see my set up as it is right now, thanks for the info and help! just want to make sure i dont order the wrong stuff or anything extra! http://s987.photobucket.com/user/frit...=3&o=1

You could probably just drill a hole in the middle of that bracket so the bolt from the clevis can go through it. Everything else you would need. If your helm is in the original place, the 8' cable like I mentioned should be perfect. On mine, I still had + or - 3" since the stand off bracket was in the middle of the clamp tube.
