Here is a boat I found that the guy says is a 1977 hull but I do not think they made a blue interior then? Also he says it has new gel coat. How can you tell if it is gelcoat or repainted?

Thanks Rusty

That's a 1971 or older. I've often wondered what troubles may arise when you buy a boat with a title that you know to be incorrect. Maybe it's no big deal. Me.. I'd be concerned. What if the boat/owner who's actual VIN matches that title attempts to register in the same state? What if he can prove that title is his? What happens to your boat and title?

My 16' is 46 years old and had never been titled as it wasn't required in Tennessee. The only way I was able to acquire a Florida title was with old registrations, a bill of sale with that same person's name and signiture (Thank God I bought if from the man who had been registering it since the 60s), and written verification from Tennessee Fishing and Gaming verifying that titles weren't issued in that state before 1972. Florida informed me that had I not been able to meet these requirements, I had just restored a boat that couldn't be registered or used. I got lucky. I will NEVER purchase a boat with questionable paperwork.

As far as how to tell gelcoat from paint. Certainly the owner would require NDT (non-destructive testing). Who could blame him! Without scratching the surface, I don't know. Hopefully someone will answer as I've often wondered myself.
