This winter I've decided to re-paint the bottom of my 1961 16 ft BW. After doing some research I heard about Pettit Bio-Blast paint remover. I hear that it does a great job and doesn't damage your gel coat. I was wondering if anyone has heard anything bad or good about the product? Also if it's better to just remove the paint by sanding?

I have no experience with Pettit Bio Blast (which appears to be a discontinued product) but this article from Practical Sailor magazine may be of interest:

Thanks for the article. Its weird after looking around on what you said about it being discontinued. I found websites like Iboats.com and Jamestown distributors that don't sell it and then others that do. Soy-trip on the other hand is the exact product that I am looking for. Thanks

I believe Pettit just discontinued the Bio-Blast for 2014 so some vendors are still selling their existing inventory, while others have sold out.

It has been a long time, I don't bottom paint anymore. But, Peel Away has worked well for me. Sherwin Williams used to sell it too. Put on the paste, cover it with the paper they give you (wax paper) so it doesn't dry out, go back to it in a day or so and scrape it off with a plastic putty knife, paint comes off like butter. You just have to make sure you wash the hull really well with the neutralizer they sell or (vinegar and water) otherwise your paint won't adhere properly. No toxic fumes or sanding dust to deal with!

I used Soy Strip at the end of last summer. It worked exactly as advertised. It worked fast in the Texas heat. We started scraping with squeegees 20-30 minutes after application. After a good pressure wash, it was ready to sand. It took 1 gallon for a Montauk 17'. it was odorless and biodegradable. The boat is presently getting new gel coat. I will post a project album soon.
