Hi Guys !

First post and first motorized boat of my own ! Live in Santa Cruz, Ca and most of my boating will be out of the local harbor into the Monterey Bay !

New boat for me is a 1972 Montauk 17 with an evinrude 70hp 2 stroker

Two questions if I may !

1- With the cover deals at Cabelas right now does anyone have any idea which generic model and length would fit the best for my boat ?

That was the easy one

2 - Downrigger and pot puller locations ? I've searched around for while and there seems to be a few choices for downriggers BUT I also have access to a pot puller and the added weight makes the rails seem like a NO NO.
CAn anyone help me out with mounting locations, brackets, etc ? The current puller is mounted on a Scotty base and I cannot change his puller ! I'm pulling crab pots 200-250ft and know a spot for shrimp at 450ft too ;-)

Thanks so much,

Captain Tobias and his 4 legged skipper Milo !

Hello and Welcome to WhalerCentral.

To begin with, there is no such thing as a 1972 Montauk as they were not made until 1973.

So, you must have some other model that was called a 16' instead of a 17'.
See this FAQ:
http://www.whalercentral.com/faq.php?...p?cat_id=5

You should be able to tell what year and model it is by looking at the Stencil number and the models section.
Here is info on Stencil numbers:
http://www.whalercentral.com/articles...icle_id=61

And here is info on the different models:

Let us know what model you have so many members here can help you out better.

Congratulation on your purchase of whatever model it is.

OK - you are right and it's not even a 1972 ! Most likely registered then
I got pulled over on my 1966 honda Black Bomber once and the cop asked me about the bike - I told him and forgot that the reg said 1969 because that was when it was uncrated and registered - That ended up being a very long stop ;(

It was built in 1970 based on the stencil - It is a custom at this point.
I've looked at the pictures and can't really tell much difference from the Eastport, Nausett and Sakonnet ?
Al that looks semi-stock on mine is the wooden center console but that has been modified and is in very poor shape, everything else has been changed
It still has what seems to be original rails
