Thread subject: Whaler Central - Boston Whaler Boat Information and Photos :: Whaler Shopper Network

Did you ever wish you had someone available in a far away location to look at a Whaler for you? I know I have and I'd bet many of our members have

We have created a "Whaler Shopper Network" to help with situations such as this.

It is a simple concept. Any WhalerCentral member willing to inspect a boat on behalf of a fellow member can sign up to participate. You can also remove your name from the list or update your shopper profile at any time.

Do you think this will be of value to you or others? Let us know.

Thanks,
Mike

Thanks Scott. I hope it becomes a useful tool. So far, we're good for the Twin Cities and your area of New Jersey!

The state selection list is now updated to include Canadian Provinces.

Well we're building up a small head of steam - 6 locales spoken for. Hope it keeps growing.

Mike great idea. This should have been done years ago.

I have a list of questions I tend to ask (in person or over email) and a list of things to check for when looking at a whaler. I would be willing to compile it all into one document (right now it is scattered over 6 or so documents) so if members go look at boats for others they have a list of things to go over with the owner/broker to provide a detailed description back to the person looking into a whaler.

Also,

What if the inspector could scan in the survey and add photos then it could be uploaded here and archive it in a data base. Then later if you were looking at a whaler down the road you could search by NIN#, hull stencil #, or state reg # and see if the hull had been surveyed before and if so what condition was the boat in back then vs today? It could help bring to light past issues that may be hidden now.

I know it is a big idea and requires a lot of work but it would be VERY useful.

Jeff thats a great idea - it is a bit of work but as you said it could be very useful. I for one would love to have some sort of checklist or questionnaire that we could fill out and send to the person who asked us to look at it. That way you can cover all the important bases.

i second the checklist idea. I know what I look for but consistency would be nice.

Jeff,

I like the checklist idea. It will help nearly everybody. I think collecting the data on individual boats might be a little difficult from a privacy standpoint. It would be fine if a boat owner consents to such info being posted. But it may require something like a consent form signed by the owner. Then those forms would need to be archived. These are just guesses on my part though.

When you have a checklist built. We'll publish it in the downloads and the discussion area then see where it goes.

Thanks,
Mike

Check out the test map added Whaler Shopper page. It lists the locations of the members on the Shopper list.

It is only a test because it is a static page and does not draw the information from the database - yet. The locations have been added manually. Any new members on the list won't show up on the map until we get a chance to add them. In the meantime I'll be checking into automating it.

Just wanted to get it showing and get an idea how it strikes everyone.

Ok folks, have located a Duf purchase in Del and have contacted Dan from Del to check it out for me. Its a 22 Outrage with a very unusal leaning post (massive) and an 04 Yamaha 200 on the back. Its a bit pricy, but i think with the newer motor well worth it.

Anyhow, i just sent him an e-mail asking he check it out, so we'll stand by and see how the new link works. At worse, Dan will save me a trip from Corpus / a boat arrving by truck thats not what i expected, / or sending my brother from Conn to look at it!!

Mike/Jeff, in e-mail contact with Dan and he is approximately 1.5 hours away from the boat i'm looking at. Jeff, would be great to have your "inspection list" for him to go by, so if you even have a draft, that will work. If your ready for at least an initial go by inspection list, please release and we can adjust it as we go. Will be very cool if this all works out!!

All, Dan has sucessfully completed his mission and sent a pool of pictures. I sent them to Joe to load where it is appropriate on this website. Dan captured (with no go by list) numerous ding, dents and rents (in the prop) not shown by the advertisement. To say the least, a huge success on allowing me to see the general condition of the boat. A beautiful boat with great lines, a lot of extras, but definately misused, and totally lacking any normal TLC, not to mention way over priced.

Dan, thanks again for your efforts and keeping me from a very long trip for nothing.............at least at that price. 1/2...........perhaps :) as you said, a lot of elbow grease.

Dan,

The photos are great. You did a fantastic job taking them.
Here are the photos Dan took for Duf...
EDIT: Removed non-existent link...

Duf,
That boat has all the extras...
1. Factory Bow Pulpit
2. Super Console with Electronics Box
3. Super Leaning Post
4. Raw Water Wash Down

Too bad it wasn't what you wanted at the price...
Glad you didn't have to drive a long way to see for yourself the shape it was in.

Thanks for doing that Dan... You paved the way for more of us to hopefully have a chance to do the same for others.
You saved Duf a long trip....

I agree Joe, it is a special boat but the 20 K their asking for it is way to high. The boat needs a ton of work, but could be something exceptional with a lot of effort. Plan on mulling on it a few days and probably making them an offer. I have nothing but time on my side!

Worked out great to check out the 22 Outrage for Duf. I was traveling there anyway. Sent him a report via email and also talked to him when I was onsite via cell phone. www.craigslist.com has quite a few listings for whalers, and it's a viable site to check when shopping. My area would include their listings for Eastern Shore, MD, Delaware, maybe Philadelphia or Lancaster, and central Jersey.

Tried Joe's link to my pictures and it didn't work the first time, but it did when I tried a second time. Thanks for all the support out there, guys and gals!

Hey Jeff, How is that list of "Boston Whaler Survey Questions" coming along ? I have my 22 Outrage for sale right now and I will volunteer my boat for the survey, and have no problem with the results and pictures being posted here on this site. This is a great idea both from a seller and buyers standpoint, heck, I like the idea of another Boston Whaler enthusiast inspecting my boat, he will possibly see things I might overlook and could potentially help me sell the boat.

That's great, Jeff. You had quite a good list going in one of your recent posts. Several things I wouldn't have thought of to check. Would it make sense to have it in a MS Word document that could be downloaded as well as HTML?

The revised version is finished and mailed to Joe and Mike. Look for it soon. It ended up being 19 pages long. I hope people will find it useful and also educational. At least it will be something anyone can download, print, and use to go over while inspecting a vessel. It will also be a help to the person who has asked for the inspection as they can, over the phone, go through the inspection in a detailed and thorough manor.

Jeff

Great work, and much needed. I made my first Whaler purchase less than a month ago, and this would have prompted me to ask more questions. It's tough when you get the "Whaler Stare" going, and need to remember what to ask. I'm very happy with my Outrage, but this would have been very helpful. Anyone covering the Northern California area yet?

Thanks

Kent (Bigfish114)

Kent,

Northern California is bigger than many states. So, I am covering Upstate California and Southern Oregon... From Redding to Medford along Interstate 5 basically...

Haven't heard from anyone down in your part of California yet that I know of.

I work a large part of Northern California where I am traveling constantly. I be happy cover anywhere in from San Francisco North up the coast. I am also in the Sacramento Valley from Sacramento on up.

Thank you Duf!!! Duf checked out a 1987 18 Outrage in Rockport Texas for me. I live in NY and Duf was bringing his 22 Ragedy Ann nearby for a software upgrade to his eTec. I'm very grateful for the Whaler Shopping Network and hope to reciprocate by looking at Whalers in my area.

http://corpuschristi.craigslist.org/b...41910.html

It's a very nice Whaler but I'm passing on it in case anyone else is interested. I have a lot of photos taken by Duf that I can e-mail if interested.

Mike, Joe & Jeff: I'm new to the site, and I'm no expert on Whalers (particularly OEM issues), but I've been in and on a Whaler since I was a kid. I'm in the process of restoring that boat, my father's 1985 Montauk, at this time and plan on calling on you guys and the members of this site as the work progresses. The least I can do is offer to check out and report on any boats of interest in my area of Alabama, the north & central portions of the state. I'm not exactly in the hotbed of the Whaler nation, but I'm willing to help. Only problem is, I didn't see Alabama as an option on the sign up sheet!

Jeff -

Have you considered adding the inspection article to the downloads or articles pages. I was looking for it tonight and spent 20 minutes trying to find it. Then I remembered this thread. Just a suggestion.

P.S. Is it there and I missed it? It's cold here :(

EDIT - ARGH! I found the inspection survey inside the article after I posted. Is there a way to add it as a separate item?

We have updated the Whaler Shopper Network pages.

It is now map based. With a clickable marker for each Shopper that will tell you where the shopper is located, where they will shop and a link to their email.

I converted the old database table and edited some of the info to work within the confines of the new network setup. Some shoppers didn't list a city so they are listed only for the state or province they listed.

You can register or update your shopper info by clicking on the "Edit Whaler Shopper Info" link in your user info box on the right side of each page.

I have been going through the Whaler Shopper members and found a few problems with some of the members original input.

1. You must put the CITY, STATE in which you live in order to have a pin set correctly on the map.
You cannot put in 2 cities or 2 states in your location.
You can also not just put in the state. The pin might end up out in the ocean or a pin might not be set at all.

2. City, Province for those of you outside of the US.

Please "Edit Whaler Shopper Info" under your profile on the right sidebar.

You can put in any location you want under "where you will shop" but you need to put in the City, State in which you live for this to work correctly.

I have changed some of the information for some members that need to add the City, State information.
As it stands, some of you have this for your City, State...
I inserted: City, State for those of you that didn't have the proper info inserted.

Please fix this info so the records can be up to date.
Thanks.

I also removed some members that no longer were participating as they haven't visited our site for several years. We are trying to keep this up to date so if someone needs something, they can contact a willing participant.

And one last thing.
If you no longer wish to participate, please delete your posting or someone may send you an email for help.
