I am in the process of doing research on purchasing a used 17' Whaler Montauk. My vehicle (2008 Jeep 4 door Unlimited) has a towing capacity of 3500 lbs. Does anyone know the approximate towing weight of the Montauk hull, 70hp engine and trailer combined?

I looked through sites and forums and just can't seem to find if the towing weight would exceed 3500 pounds.

Any help you can provide would be very helpful.

I always figured about 2,000 lbs including trailer for my Classic Montauk 17'...

Roughly:
950 lbs for boat
250 to 300 lbs for engine
500 lbs for trailer
fuel, battery, extras ?

2,000 is the number I had for mine too. An easy tow.

Years ago I had mine weighed for towing during a Coast Guard transfer. Put her on the commercial truck-stop scales and it came in at 2,060 pounds. 1982 Montauk, 90-hp Evinrude, 2 12-gallon tanks (empty), miscellaneous gear (not excessive).

My 1979 Montauk, 90 HP Yamaha 4 stroke, galvanized trailer, 26 gal fuel, T Top, Tow Rail, cooler and all other gotta haves weighs 2300. I tow it with my 2001 6 cylinder Jeep Wrangler with manual trans. The Jeep has 50,000 on it now at 9 years old and even in hot Florida weather has never had a problem. The 4 door is rated at 3500 with my 2 door only 2000. Be prepared to change the front brakes sooner. I had to at 30,000. I use a Chock at the boat ramp with the hand brake on and engine 0ff in 1st gear. Otherwise it will be less of a problem for you with a longer wheelbase.
