Hello everyone,
I've just joined whaler central and am looking forward to tapping into the knowledge base here. I have just acquired what I believe to be a 1974 montauk in rough condition. The boat is underpowered with a 70 hp yamaha 2003 shortshaft two stroke. Been on the water my whole life and ready to see if I can get this one restored. The floor is soft and not uniform and I know that will have to be cut out and redone. This is my major concern and am looking for advice before taking the job on. Everything has been removed ( all hardware controls console and fuel). How do I go about cutting the floor out? I appreciate any advice.

Are you sure the floor is not just delamination? There is not much wood in that floor.

Of course I would not even think about doing this unless you are very sure you have major problems.

Now that you have everything off, it would be a good time to weigh the hull to see just where things stand.

All great insight. I've not weighed the hull and will not have that as an option as I am located in an out island of the Bahamas. The boat had approximately four inches of water in it at the dock for about nine months to the best of my knowledge. Never went all the way under but it had been scavenged with the bilge pump and yamaha parts stolen over the course of time. The boat is burping water through holes in the floor when you walk on it. Most of it feels soft and saturated with water. I would love to avoid this major work but am afraid there is no other way. One gentleman wrote that there was not much wood in the floor. Is the wood limited to a specific area that I could cut out and repair? I am not familiar with the deck construction on this one. Thanks for any help and for the quick responses.

Walk Away! Don't fall in love!
Whalers are just great big sponges. Trust me, if you think just getting the hull weighed is beyond the limits of your resources out there,ripping apart a waterlogged Montauk is going to be VERY difficult.
Just my opinion, but from the sound of things, this project is gonna' drive you nuts!!
