I have the chance to buy a project 1974 outrage that is originally powered with a I/O motor. Seems like the hull is in pretty good shape, the motor is said to run but has hours on it's 165 horses. If this were to be restored what would it's aprox value be and would I be able to sell it or is it too undesireable with that engine? I already have a montauk so this would just be for the fun of it as a project with my son. Any help would be appreciated. Here is one that is exactly like the one I am looking at.

Honestly it would likely be worth a fraction of the same boat as an outboard model. I/O powered classics seem to linger on the market for months and months and months even while at asking prices far below that of the standard outboard models. Also the old inline 165 Mercruiser is a motor to stay away from. If you really want an I/O look for one with a V8.

I would say the guesstimate would depend more on the condition of the boat. I have seen people that call boats a project when they need a good cleaning. as Jeff said the inboard will not add value, but it will add wow. All the people that would not want to own it will love to check it out because it is different. If there is a lot to do on the project side you will have to get it close to nothing if you have resale in mind. there is always a deal out there on a running boat. I have a good Idea I could not sell my project boat and make a lot of money but I will have a one of a kind boat that will turn heads every time I take here out. I think I will go out and work on her a bit today after posting this.

If I sold my project boat, it is a montuak not an outrage, I would lose a ton of money if I counted my labor.
