I just found a 13 foot boston whaler for around $300. I am new to these boats and need some advice.

1. Is this a good price.....condition is fair
2. Can I run a small outboard like a 6 hp on it?
3. How to I find out if it has water in foam or not
4. Should I be concerned about age.... its a 1962 model

Do you have any pics? I'd say go for it but then again I don't care how much work it would take to bring it back to life. As far as wet foam...not a big deal to dry out. I would be glad to give you tips on how if you decide to buy. The hull should weigh around 275 lbs. If you can pick up the transom by yourself then I would say the foam is fine. As far as a motor....you would be better served with something like a 15-40hp. A 6hp would work too hard to push the hull along...so I think....maybe others here have some experience with smaller motors.

mstahl, i would love your advice on dealing with water in the foam. just 2 days ago i purchased a 1986 13ft sport. i'm not new to whalers, i grew up with a 1973 13 sport but a tree fell on it about 7 years back and i'm finally a whaler owner again. i don't really think i have water in the hull, there is just a spot where it looks like someone put the boat on the trailer with no rubber on the middle roller and it wore a hole thru the gel coat and glass. i just don't really know how to go about patching it up the right way. any advice is greatly appreciated!

OP, i would think that unless the hull has some pretty major damage throught he fibergalss and gel coat to the foam, you should be okay. i am in the process of rescuing a 66 and it is easily lifted by 2 people.
