I just bought a 1977 sport 13. I noticed that the transom has been notched out to put a short shaft motor on it but the current motor which does not run is a long shaft. The previous owner was a family member and I remember using the engine multiple times with no problems I could see. I need to get a different engine to put on the boat. Should I try to get a short shaft since the transom was notched out or should I stick with a long shaft? What would be the possible repercussions of a long shaft motor on the boat?
I have a picture of the transom on my personal page so you can see what I mean.

Are you sure your boat is a 1977? The front bow locker looks to be older.

my HIN on the back is BWCC3341M77D. When i got pictures of the boat I thought it was a 1972. But the title and the HIN said different. The blue looks to have been painted on and I would like to get it taken off if it was not the original.
I also started to believe it was a 1977 because the transom looks like it has been cut and not by the factory.

It certainly appears to be a 1977 model.
Too bad someone cut the transom down in size.
Can't really tell the detail from the photos...
You could add a tansdapter or have it built back to original.

how do you measure a motor to find its shaft length?
the motor that was on it worked very well when working and it looks to be a long shaft but I may be wrong which would explain why the transom was cut out?

I would guess they would have cut the transom in order to use a short shaft engine they already had
Can you take some pictures from the side showing the engine mounted on the transom and where the bottom of the engine is in relation to the bottom of the boat. That will give a pretty quick idea of whether it is short or long shaft.

It's an older motor. It could very likely be a 15" Measure the midsection just under the motor down to the cavitation plate. Also check the model number on the motor.

Wow, that's really a shame the transom was cut like that. It is obvious it was a modification because the shape of the notch is different than the factory smirked 15" hull.
It also looks like more than 5 inches was notched out. You actually only need about 3" of drop to make a 15" motor work on a 13 with a 20" transom.
It is also fairly obvious if a motor is a short shaft or a long shaft. If yo are not familiar with the visual differences, measure the distance from the AV (cavitation) plate to the underside of the mounting clamps or hooks. A 15" Short shaft will measure ~16" to 17-1/2" while a 20" Long will measure ~ 21" to 22-1/2".

I'd prefer to just fix this engine but it has a worn stator plate that they no longer produce. Im just trying to figure out what motor I should put on it. The transom was cut about 6 inches.
I posted the pics requested on my personal page since I don't know how to add them on here.

Also I paid 1000 for this boat. It had a brand new trailer and the engine obviously does not run. Do you think this was a good price even though the transom was cut?
