Thread subject: Whaler Central - Boston Whaler Boat Information and Photos :: In Line Fuel Filters

I recently installed a new fuel tank, fuel line, primer bulb and see-thru fuel filter in my Whaler. When testing the boat at idle (in the backyard) I noticed that the fuel is quickly sucked out of the see-thru filter (and its stays empty) but the engine continues to run fine – even when I rev up the engine.

Since this is the first time I’ve had a see-thru filter—is this normal? Shouldn’t you be able to always see fuel in the filter ? --- YES I’ve double checked to make sure I have not installed the filter or primer bulb backwards.

THANX

AJ

I did the same thing....mine ran fine at idle but when I opened the throttle, the engine started to miss and sputter..fuel starvation....I ve taken the inline plastic filter out and am installing a mounted Racor fuel/Water seperator...it has a larger "well" of fuel. The boat had one of these in the past and it was removed cause it always got in the way....but its worth the problem if I dont have to worry about water and dirt in the carbs of my Yamaha.

You have to be careful about installing extra fuel filters for the exact reason noted by fredbrillo. If I remember correctly, with the larger Mercury engines, if the flow restriction exceeds .25 inches of mercury at max flow, you can experience fuel starvation. I recommend you call tech services for the particular make and model of your engine and let the experts tell you which, if any, external filters/water seperators can be used on your motor. Trust me, I deal with Mercury's folks on a weekly basis and they will be happy to give you the straight scoop. You can call them at 920-929-5040 and ask for tech support. And always make sure you have your engine serial number so they can look up the info for your motor. Or just email them via their website and save the long distance charges.
I know we have a lot of corporate knowledge here, but it never hurts to get it straight from the experts especially when it's free.
For you Honda, Yammie and Evinrude folks out there, I'm only a Merc guy but I'm sure the same info is available via their websites also.

I also have a see through fuel filter. I noticed mine wasn't filling completely either, however I have never had any issues with it or the boat not running well (knock on wood). We are going t get a fuel water separator too and think it is an investment in your motor and peace of mind.

It reads to me the inline filter is not the right size for your motor. Each filter has a fuel capacity, usually stated in gph.

What is the brand and model of your filter?

For a 70-115 hp motor, I would recommend a spin on type (Moeller, Sierra or Racor).
