I'm looking for information on suggested minimum fuel tank size for a 2 stroke freshly re-built 10 year old Johnson 90 on a 17' Whaler. Here's the situation: Completly gutted the interior of the boat and am designing and building my own RPS. As I'd like to make sure that I have additional space for under-seat storage I don't want to fill the entire space with fuel tank. I also don't want to carry extra fuel in seperate tanks. My current design is based on an 18 gallon Moeller. Boat usage will involve journys as far as 20-30 miles between fuel stops.

Some 17' Montauks have two 12 gallon tanks under their RPSs. I think that 18 gallons will be able to easily take you 30 miles.

I used a portable 18 gal tank on my 18' Outrage with a Johnson 150. I would get a good day out of the tank, not sure how many miles.

I agree with both responses. Fuel consumption is directly related to many variables. Running 30 miles on plane and at a scaled back RPM will be considerably more economical then doing numerous hole shots, towing skiers and blasting at WOT in a stiff wind or with a few adults on board. Depending on the body of water, if I have any such concerns I always take along a 3 gallon reserve tank but I have never had to use it. Peace of mind is priceless and an extra 20 -25 pounds won't rock the boat.
