for the record,
the front locker on an 18 was never teak, it was always gelcoated. It also did not always have hinges, that was a later addition. The sump cover is easily lost, either on the highway or when the boat gets swamped.

It does sound like the boat needs lots of work, probably good that you passed. It's hard to work on a boat during the summer when you would rather be boating on it.
