We have owned a 1973 13' Whaler for years. We found a 1993 21' with 1993 225hp Johnson motor. Any concerns with this age motor? Our 13' has an 1984 motor and we've had no issues.

I have been running a 1992 200 hp Johnson which is essentially the same motor as yours since I bought it new. In fact, in 2005 I pulled it off my old boat and put it on a new hull. The only problem with the older motors is the fact they like gas, a lot of gas. I looked at it like this....You can buy a lot of gas for the price of a new motor at $20,000.00! And, then you still have to buy gas for it as well.

12 years later, my motor still runs fine and I saved 20 grand.

A 1993 engine is at the end of its life. Get a four stroke. I have a 21 ft 1994 Outrage I repowered with a 250 hp Yamaha. Best choice I have made

If it runs good now, it will probably run good for a while. The engine is 24 years old. Unless the previous owner used it an abnormally greater amount than the average owner, it probably only has around 600 or so hours on it. Unless it looks terrible, has lots of rust, is hard to start or runs poorly, I'd use it until I didn't trust it any more.

Of course, if you plan on taking the boat on trips far from shore or in very remote areas, you might want to consider a newer engine.
