New again to the forum. Previously owned 2007 Montauk 170 and the 2009 Outrage 190 but in my age and wisdom have come to appreciate the classic lines of the classic Whalers.
Had the opportunity to look at a 1984 Outrage 18' with a 2001 Optimax 135. Owners friend is selling the boat for him and has limited history. I don't have any pics engine does not run and fuel system is all gunked up. Not concerned about the engine side of things but...
rubrail is completely separated on both sides midway all the way back to stern, transom gelcoat has some serious cracks in it just on the upper edge and one motor mount bolt looks pulled into the glass?, fuel fill vent is crushed into gelcoat, serious gelcoat chunks gone from slamming dock with no fenders, bottom has paint and covered in barnacles but no signs of keel damage where I scraped the barnacles off.
My two biggest concerns are the bowrail is missing and the main hole is plugged with black "putty" but the screw holes weren't filled in and all mounting locations have duct tape on them! Also, the starboard side deck towards the stern that looks to be formed out of the gunnel has not so much soft spots but areas where you can see ridges from the box/stringers below?
Looking for a project but this boat has been seriously neglected over the years. Looking for some input from the pros. Thanks
Don't forget the installed gas tank. That probably needs to be replaced as well as all fuel lines. I wouldn't want to take that on again. A new tank will cost you $1000 at least with shipping.
