What is the best way to remove the black mildew spots that are in the bare mahogany once all the varnish is removed? Should I keep sanding with a heavier grit? Is it possible to bleach them out?
I went after mine with random-orbit sander with 60-grit. It made quick work of it and the results were excellent. You could try bleach but it might leave a patchy surface, or be incompatible with the varnish you put on afterwards.
Be careful in that sanding may me working the spots deeper in the wood. A chlorine/bleach solution does a very nice job. Do several applications. I battle mold/mildew all the time with the environmental conditions at my property (redwoods). You do not want to varnish over any mildew residual.
