Hi All - I have used this site a lot for research - thanks to all who contribute to it. I now need some specific advice and hope you all can help me.

I currently have a 1987 18 Outrage with:

I) 2006 Yamaha 4 stroke (<350 hrs) - ~ 48 MPH with gear/fuel/people and burns <6 gal an hour with normal use.
II) full Mills 2010 mooring cover, Bimini, specialty marine: stern seat, leaning post and bow cushion set from '09
III) 2013 Humminbird 408120-1 Fishfinder 597ci HD DI Combo
IV) 2010 Load Rite 5 Starr bunk trailer with disc breaks

I am thinking of trading up to a late 1980's Outrage 20 with Whaler Drive or 22 Outrage. I initially was looking for a 22 but really started to like the idea of the closed transom when I ran into this post on LI: http://longisland.craigslist.org/boa/...02593.html for $18,100, no trailer and 1998 200 Johnson.

My logic for trading up to the 20/22 -
1) move from 7 to 10 or 11 max capacity for headcount (20 vs 22), which I need due to family size increased to 4 + we frequently bring friends/extended family out.
2) I really have started to like the closed transom of the 20 - WD
3) The 20 - WD and 22 are virtually the same size and still very trailer-able, which is important to me.

There was posing on LI Craig's list in early March for 20 Outrage - WD with T-Top, 2009 250 eTec with <50 hours and trailer (albeit a roller trailer, which I would have swapped out) for $20k that ended up selling before I could get there for $15,500.

The Port Jeff posting seems far over priced - my gut tells me the hull is worth $7-$8 k + $3-$4K for the 1998 power plant (which supposedly has low but unconfirmed hours) so call it $12k on the high side. The trailer is extra but new and available for $2600.

A few questions, which I have lettered for simple replies to this thread:

A) Would I be a complete fool (please don't hold back ladies & gentlemen) to offer $14k all in with trailer?
B) Is the 20 outrage - WD so rare that it is worth more or should the overall package (Less trailer) really be closer to $8 - $10k?
C) Should I just go late 1980's 22 Outrage?; there are a handful (also overpriced) on the market right now and likely many more to come over time... I just have really started to like the '20 - WD.
D) If I were to guess the value of my boat, I would say $6k Hull + $6K power plant + $2K interiors/electronics/trailer - $14k overall - am I way off? Anyone interested?
E) Anyone have a late 1980's 20 or 22 Outrage they are looking to sell? I really love these designs and want late '80s so other makes/years need not reply! Trade options are welcome.

Thanks all for reading my post and thanks in advance for any/all of your advice -
Kind regards -
Thad

Hi Thad,

That Outrage 20 WD with closed transom sure is a nice looking boat. I can see why it would be interesting to you.

Just thinking out loud -- I own the same hull as you (19 Outrage II), and if I was ever going to upsize I think I would not bother unless I could go up at least two sizes to an Outrage 22. My thinking is the modest extra size of the Outrage 20 wouldn't be enough to outweigh the hassle of buying/selling etc.

Then again, an Outrage 20 may be your Goldilocks boat ("just right") and this one with the closed transom is certainly attractive.

If you decide to look at Outrage 22s instead, there happen to be several very nice ones on th emarket down in the SC region. Pricier, yes, but very nice condition.

The market in the area tells you the value. I give up figuring "What is it worth?". What is it worth to you? With a low offer the worst that could happen is the seller can say no. Are you in that big a rush? Do you have "....cash in hand...." and the ca-hones for immediate decision if you wait for that great deal in the next year or 2 that you jump on. I have a 22' 1979 Revenge that when purchased was basically a trailer, hull, and old motor. I was happy with the transaction but have seen better deals since. I wanted that particular hull. Noi regrets.

Thad-

There is not a significant difference between an Outrage 18 and 20.
I would not carry 10 people on a Outrage 22. You need to re-think your passenger counts. That is just not safe and there just isn't enough room to move around.

Here is how I see it on an Outrage 22:

3 on a full length stern seat
2 on RPS facing stern
Driver and passenger standing at console
2 on forward cooler.

That makes 9.

A) That is an old motor. If the motor fails, you are looking at 12k to repower. Main tank will need to be replaced ~$2k. I would pass since it is too small for 10 people.

D) If your boat has bottom paint, 10k, If not then 12K assuming it is very clean and the hull is shiny.

I owned a 1989 Outrge 20 with WhalerDrive and a Honda 2007 200 for 8 years. It was a great boat and in fact I just sold it without having to list it for sale. It went to a great owner for a very fair price. I have moved up to a 1991 Outrage 25 whalerDrive so that I can fish a little further out. The Outrage 20 is not a 10 person boat but did us well with four adults and four kids. I liked it better than an open transom 22 and it handled better than the Outrage 18 in rough water. As to a fair price it really depends on the condition of the motor. $14k could be fair if the motor has been really well maintained. But I would want to be very sure about the motor.

I went from a 1966 16' Whaler to the 20 Outrage. Had I owned an Outrage 18' I do not think I would have gone for the Outrage 20 but would have waited for a classic Ourtage 25. That said I loved the Outrage 20 and will miss its ease of trailering, it's low use of fuel and the fact that it always got me home in some rough weather off Cape Cod.

I am sure I will feel the same about the Outrage 25 once I get to know it and after I complete its restoration:

- new fuel tank
- new engines
- new steering
- new wiring
- all new teak

Launch date May 15, 2016

Best

Stephen

Thad, any chance your 18 Outrage is for sale? I'm right nearby and in the market . . .
