I do not know if anyone has seen this before, but I need to replace the scoop strainer for the wash down/bait well pump on my 1989 27 Whaler and found that scoop was installed with the opening towards the rear. Was this intentional or just poor workmanship?

(changed abbreviated year to full 4 digit year per guideline #1 at the top of this page)

Sounds like it's exactly the way it should be - do you really want the boat's forward motion to be forcing water up into the pump? Not to mention creating additional drag.

Turn it around and try it - you may get some interesting results!

I checked with PERKO and they said opening forward. Still confused.

If you are talking about something like this:

http://www.perko.com/catalog/underwat..._strainer/

then in both boats I've owned that were equipped with one, and any installation I have ever seen (many, many) the open scoop was always facing aft (closed portion forward).

The idea of having the opening facing aft is to prevent the high water pressure caused by forward motion from forcing its way up into the thru-hull and beyond. This orientation also helps to prevent smaller debris from being forced through the strainer.

Makes sense to me. When I first called Perko they told me to look at the video on their website when a Perko person was on ShipShape. It said opening forward.

There is a reason it is called a "scoop strainer".

Designed to give positive water flow underway.

Thanks, Duane
