1969 13' hull that needs love

Hi all!
Long story short my uncle let us borrow his 16' 1969 sakonnet for the past few summers and I fell in love. When we had to return the boat, I started looking for myself and I picked up an old 13' hull. Apparently, it has sat in a barn for the past 10 years and is bone dry. Two people can easily pick it up, for what thats worth. I probably was overzealous when I bought the boat and took a big bite that may be hard to swallow. The paint is pretty trash and the top gel coat isnt in awesome shape, but at least the foam is (presumably) dry?
There are two damage spots on the bottom, on the port and starboard keels towards the front, probably right where the boat hits a nice plane in the water. One is more of a gash in the fiberglass, while the other is more of a 2in by 2in hole. The rubrail is trash. As I said, I probably bit off more than I can chew here, and was looking for some advice on where to start. Was thinking about just flipping her over and taking off what remains of the bottom pain and sanding to get a better idea of the damage. Any suggestions are much appreciated. Thanks again!

Yours does sound like a fun project though. I'd love to see pictures of the hull.

Sorry! I think this will work...thanks for taking a look I really appreciate it. I think the original gel coat hasnt been painted (except for some bottom paint) and the rub rail is the original? all white...glued on. It started to come off on the starboard side and looked like someone just screwed it down.

What is your goal?
If you want to just use your boat,
grind the gelcoat and paint about 2-3" around the gash,
cut any loose fibers out of the hole area to the foam.
Coat the area with resin to seal.
Fill the hole with small layers of FG,
or a chopped up FG/resin mix,
or a spread of bondo if it's really deep,
then a couple patch size layers.
Now grind/sand it down flat,
depending on your level of cosmetics.
The on the water performance will not change if it is raised a little,
so smoothing with filler before paint is your call.
If you want a winter project,
than flip it over and start sanding!

certainly a fun winter project. I want it usable, but I also want it to look halfway decent. Working on grabbing some 2x4s to flip it over on and start sanding/scraping the bottom paint off. Random orbital sander a good tool for the job? How about grit? Thinking about sanding the gel coat and trying to fill the spider cracks, prime, and paint. Any product recommendations that will help her last another 40 years? Also any sanding tips before I start? Im real timid about screwing something up miserably.
