1980 Montauk 17

I came across this project boat it is completely in pieces but all there, It has a mercury 120 hp 2 stroke with approx 50 hrs on it owner wants 3k for it, not sure how much more this will cost as this is new to me, I have restored catamarans so I can do all glass work and paint boat what I would like to know is how much should I expect to pay for hooking up all electronics, motor, gas tanks etc? there are no soft spots on hull it seems really solid just needs complete restoration all advise would be greatly appreciated
(corrected year of boat to 1980 as per poster found out)

The Montauk 170 was not made until 2002.

Here is what I see.
1. Console is not from 1989. It is from 1977 to 1982

So what year is it? we would need to know the HIN and Stencil number.

2. I don't see the Bow Rail or the Side Rails
3. Rub Rail is missing so needs a new Rub Rail
4. Can't see the bow locker cover so not sure about that.
Other then that, looks like a good project.

bilgy563: I recommend you verify the year of manufacture by researching the boat's HIN and stencil. The console shown in your photographs was dated to older Montauks 17 boats manufactured circa 1977-81. Also measure the bow anchor locker teak hatch and compare the dimensions to information available on this site. Finally, to answer your question: "alot." It seems many pieces are missing: gunwale guard, stainless rails (side/bow).

thanks rails are there owner has purchased new rub rail what about the motor any concerns about the size? is this worth 3k ??

Ok you guys nailed it it's a 1980 so I will change that talked with owner and all pieces are there removed engine cover and it looked clean but he is not budging on his 3k he estimates if I do all the glass and repainting and wood restoration along with hiring out all the electrical gas lines and motor assembly that I should be looking at about 3k! How does that sound and also want to thank you for all the advise on this!!

Not to me. That's a lot of money to spend on a project boat this size.

My question is why doesn't he just get the job done if it will only take a $3K investment to complete the restoration?
You could call his bluff and offer him $6K for the completely restored boat. But at a projected $6K investment, I'd be shopping around and seeing what is available in the $6-8K asking price range in my area.
Then again, if you are set on this Whaler and you don't mind investing significant sweat equity, this may be an option for you. But I would still offer less than he is asking.

I don't know what year that engine is but it probably weighs about 300 pounds, which is fine. Is it too powerful? I'm the wrong one to ask, I'd put a big block Chevy engine in if I could get away with it.
Is the boat worth $3000? Absolutely, and I don't think it will cost anywhere near $3000 to fix it up.

bilgy563: What kind of glass work are you talking about? Is the hull damaged and needs repair(s)? Also, have you evaluated the motor beyond just looking at it? The assessment of any outboard motor starts with a compression test of the cylinders, sampling of the lower unit gear oil, test run if possible to see if the carbs are functioning properly, and examination of cables, shift, throttle, harness, battery cable.

thanks there are a few dings and alot of holes that need to be filled as far as the motor i need to take it to a mechanic and have it tested owner dosent have a problem with that and he is not budging on his #

An engine goes rrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Unless it goes rrrrrrrrrrrr it is a chunk of aluminum often confused with an engine.
Try to SELL an engine off a boat on which it can be demonstrated and You will be reminded of the principle of rrrrrrrrrrrr.
This might not help in this deal, you might need to walk away.
The other principle is that of what it might be worth to him as opposed to what you will have to spend on it to make it work. Because unless it works, it is worthless to you. AND
You can put a thousand or four into it and unless it runs across the lake, it will be worth about what you paid for it or less!
