As a potential classic whaler owner I first want to thank you all for a good forum. It has been very helpful in my research on the 16/17.
So, I am looking at a Montauk 17, advertised as a 1976.
The Boat has been sitting on a trailer for some 20 odd years and looks to be in quite good condition for a 40 year old boat. Its powered by a Mariner 75, 1989. The motor looks fresh and has spent its whole life on the Montauk.
All in all the package looks really good for its age.
As i was browsing through this site I came upon the whole smirked/nom-smirked discussion and started to look at my potential Montauk again. And its definately non-smirked. And as I read the big investigation regarding 1976 Montauks beeing non-smirked I am more convinced the announced year 1976 is not correct for the boat.
The asking price is 7600usd, it comes with trailer and the usual package.
All this doesnt make the boat in question any worse in any way, but I´m interested to know if the hulls really differ that much?
Is one more desirable than the other?
Is the smirked a lot better over the nonsmirk in 2ft sea?
Im planning to run the boat on nice days, but sometimes you get suprised by bad weather and need to get home when this occures. I read the Montauk is wet, surely it cant be throwing water over the bow in say 1-2ft sea?
Yes, the Boston Whaler 16 hull and 17 hull differ in many ways. The 16 hull is lighter than the 17; a new mold was made to create the 17 hull; there is less wood below the non-skid on a 16; the non-skid grain is taller on 16 than later 17 hulls; the anchor locker is smaller (or smallest) on the 16, compared to the 17 later two versions. The 16 is a wetter ride when compared to the 17; but the 16 hull has better lateral stability. The 16 hull has a shallow transom splashwell making the mounting of a modern outboard motor more of a challenge, when compared to the later 17 hull (post 1983?) that has a deeper transom splashwell. The 16 hull has an interior lifting bow eye located in the anchor locker, whereas, the 17 hull has the bow lifting eye located above, outside of the anchor locker. The exterior bow eyelet is lower to the waterline on the 16 hull; The exterior bow eyelet is higher up on the 17 hull. I will defer to other members to comment on your questions of desirabilty and which is better handling in seas. Finally, yes, there is a Montauk 16 non-smirked hull model and a Montauk 17 smirked hull model.
