I am restoring the teak on my 1973 Montauk. Was that done in gloss or semi-gloss? How many coats should I do?
How do you deal with spider cracks on the hull?
And finally. Is there a search feature to the Forums?
I started fixing things that were wrong with the trailer. So far it has cost me more than a new trailer. I think I need a bigger wallet for this project.
You can varnish, oil, or do other finishes, on your wood (teak or mahogany). Others may chime in with the OEM finish on the wood for a Montauk of your era. I, like many, keep it oiled. Just keep it out of the elements, covered under canvas, to keep it looking good. For your wood restoration there is a lot of info out there - so try some google searches. Careful using teak cleaners. I sanded my teak then have kept oiled and have been very happy.
Now I want to replace the teak on the side console door and on under helm console door. Looks like I have 2 options. They sell them at Specialty Marine and at Black Duck Gallery. The ones at Black Duck Gallery look like mine but I think I will go with the ones at Specialty Marine because they are sold teak and not teak plywood. I have to face it. I can not afford to make this boat totally original. But I can get it close to it.
