Member Personal Page Posts: 26 Comments: 0 Joined: 11/12/07	The boat appears top be an early model 17' Montauk-- What I suggest you do is look on the top right section of the transom (back of the boat to which the engine is mounted)-- imbedded in the fiberglass you will find some numbers and letters--- The first 4 letters are the manufacturer-- BWCA-- will identify it as a Boston Whaler-- the last two numbers are the year of the vessel-- If you send the entire number (Hull Identification Number) to this web site they can give you additional information on the vessel. The seat, console and several other parts of the vessel have been modified from its original design AJR

Member Personal Page Posts: 26 Comments: 0 Joined: 11/12/07	look on the opposite side of the transom -- stand behind the boat and look at the upper right hand corner of the transom--- imbedded in the fiberglass--- should start with BWCA 3A6789 is the BW stencil number - suggest when you restore boast-- do not paint over that number-- clear coat it or something like that-- --Sounds to me like a real old model-- what is the length? Once you get the HIM number request the moderator of this site to give you more information about your boat--

Member Posts: 699 Comments: 0 Joined: 07/14/12	If you look at my personal website toward the bottom of the first page are photographs of the transom area of my 17 foot 1984 Montauk. The boat floats with the motor well drains right at the water line. You can see that where the water marks are on the before paint pictures. I really don't know if there is any water in my hull and I don't know where the water line was when it was new. With older whalers it isn't a matter of if there is water in there but , how much. Maybe you can find some pictures of other whalers to compare to your boat but if it floats ok with the drains above the water I wouldn't worry at all. I winter in Ft. Myers and summer in St. Joseph, Michigan. It’s now about 12 years since I’ve joined this group. I gave my 1972 whaler to my daughter and sold the 17’. Bought an O’Day 28 sailboat and sailed on Lake Michigan. Yesterday I bought a 2005 130 Sport.

Member Posts: 699 Comments: 0 Joined: 07/14/12	It depends on how much water is in the hull. 21 gallons which is about 79 liters of salt water weighs somewhere around 180lbs. That's like an extra passenger in the boat which I don't think would really use too much fuel. Have you changed the drain tube? A deteriorated brass drain tube will allow water into the foam and replacing it will show if the plywood and foam inside the hull is dry. At the top of this page find "main" and use the search feature in there to learn about changing the brass drain tube. When you read about it it will sound like it's hard but it really isn't.
