Ok. Project has been going slow... Until now! I have finally started fixing her up.
This is a 1960 13 whaler I bought a couple years ago. I have new plans for it.
- rear and possibly front casting decks
- center console
- switching carbs on evinrude 40 so it becomes a 50.
- smart tabs(don't want a hydrofoil on motor)
- maybe polling platform
Thoughts? Thanks! :)

While changing carbs may help increase H.P, you may not automatically get 50 HP. Just because the block and piston size may be the same, there are other variables that need to be considered i.e crank, rod length, timing etc. Not trying to be a killjoy because I think you have a good project going on. Just wanted to inform you what I uncovered years ago when I was trying the same with Mercury.

Ok thanks. Just trying to get a little more to take the weight of the new additions. The engine will also get a good service. It has less than 100 hours since the block was replaced(before I bought boat)
I will post a couple pics of progress later tonight.
How can i run steering, throttle, and wires from center console? Would the floor be the bes way?

My 1981 Sport 13 is powered by a fairly heavy 30 Merc EFI four stroke with tilt and trim. It runs flat as a pancake on plane. I would try the boat before installing smart tabs as they may not be needed.

I ran it for a few months before I started working on it. It was pretty bad getting on plane without a hydrofoil. Now there will be a lot of weight (12 gals gas) in back I wanted something that was better. I also think they look cool too. I have already purchased some

You may be running the wrong prop because a 40 should pop you right up on plane. So, what prop is on your engine?
I winter in Ft. Myers and summer in St. Joseph, Michigan. It’s now about 12 years since I’ve joined this group. I gave my 1972 whaler to my daughter and sold the 17’. Bought an O’Day 28 sailboat and sailed on Lake Michigan. Yesterday I bought a 2005 130 Sport. |

No clue on prop. Will need a new one anyway. Hull is light. No water intrusion

JBRC, You're 4 braces ahead of me. Starting tomorrow to rip lumber to dimension and start the template process. Good luck on your project.

Yep,
I run a 40hp 2 stroke on my 13' GLS Sport.
It pops right up on plane with 2 6gal tanks and 1 3gal tans under the rear seat plus the battery at the transom.
FYI,

40 should be plenty for the 13. If you really want to upgrade to the 50, get your hands on an OEM service manual and parts manual. You need to know the exact differences between the 40 and 50 in that year. For me it did turn out that the Nissan 40 in my year (2005) was a detuned 50. After several discussions with Tohatsu and consulting the parts manual I confirmed the difference was the carbs, reed valve limiting plates, intake manifold, throttle cam, sparks plugs, and timing settings. Everything else was the same. I purchased the parts for job used and cleaned everything up and rebuilt the carbs and I was in business. See here: http://www.whalercentral.com/userphot...lbum_id=65

Can i dril a hole in the rear bulkhead? I need to run cables steering etc. I have teflex steering. What is a good mount for transom? Please attach a link. Thanks!

I would NOT drill any holes unless you really have to. Don't cut into the splashwell.
For a clean install have the steering cable, throttle cables and all the harnesses go together (run loose in 1 1/2" dia. wire loom or rigging hose all the way to the engine.
You will need to go up and over where the rear platform meets the splashwell. It is doable.

Thank you. That's what I was thinking. How can I get cables from cc to back? Floor? Should I put a bench on both sides of console? I would prefer not on floor but I would if I had to.
