Fresh Water Engine Flushing

With modern Mercury outboards that have garden hose flushing ports, is it adequate to flush the engine with that method if the boat is used in salt water, or is it necessary to use the "earmuff" method?

From what I've read and see on here, that flushes the entire cooling jacket and is sufficient.

Just make sure the engine is off.
