Garris, I came to a decision this morning after learning that a used assembly would run about $500. I'm going to have my friend polish the ram to the best of their shop's ability and I'll install the seal kit. We'll see what happens but I'm going start saving for a new system that I'll install next Spring.
Appreciate all the advice.

John, good call. Match the seals once you get the kit or see if they sell the kit without the front threaded coupling that holds the rod in. I have an array of "pin tools" that never seem to be the right size for removing that coupling. I purchased a couple of pipe wrenches with chain instead of jaws for working with rams. Sometimes the standard pipe wrench would oblong the coupling and ruin it. The chain wrench, though clumsy, spreads the force and keep the shape intact. Good luck. Once apart you can see what is going on in there. If the inner "o" rings still pliable, chances are the pump/valve is good. Take some of the old oil and place it on some toilet paper it will tell you how clean it is. Gentle with the polishing. Do not take too much off. Best always and good luck.

Just received a text from my friend who owns the metal fabricating plant. He said: "They (his employees) did some light polishing that did not scratch the surface. Then put it on the micro view (he sent some cool photos of the damage) to check the depth. It is not a scratch, it is pitted through the nickel plating. We would have to polish all the plating off to get it all out. I do not think we want to do that. I am going to look into spray welding nickel."
The saga continues.

John, I would just put it back together and see how the rest of the system works. Do not know anything about spray welding nickel but, if the system is clean and the spray nickel lets loose in the system, you then have the repair creating another issue. If spray on is durable it may be the way to go.

I'm going to let them see what they can do and if he is not confident in the spray weld, he won't do it. We'll just test it with the pits. If the patch breaks loose and if I decide to keep the boat, I'm going to replace the entire system this winter anyway. As bad as the fluid looked when I took it apart, I'm guessing the helm is not far behind. I was amazed that the cylinder walls were in such good shape.
All I'm looking for is a couple turns around the channel to see what I bought. I won't be setting any speed records and I will have my brother out there in another boat (Whaler GTX-18) just in case something goes wrong and I need a tow back to port.
Steering and a transom drain and I'm hopefully good to go for my shakedown tests. Shooting for the end of June.

The Teleflex hydraulic steering component rebuilder I used is:
Buk Miller/Service Dept
Florida Rigging & Hydraulics Inc
3905 Investment Lane
Riviera Beach FL 33404
rigginghydraulics.com
I don't have a phone number.
For good pricing on replacement hydraulic steering components, see http://www.lowcostboatingstore.com/Ou...c_250.html
Or try suplusunlimited.com
I have had good experience purchasing from both operations.

I went ahead and installed the seal kit and then reinstalled the front mount assembly, bled the system and after turning the engine from port to starboard about 219 times, the steering system showed no signs of slipping, weird noises, etc. So I'm going to go ahead and do my water test with this system. Hope to water test the old boat at the end of the month. If it passes muster, I'll put replacing the steering system at the top of the list for winter projects.
Appreciate all the advice.

John,
Congrats. If it does well the whole year you might not have to make it a winter priority and focus on other stuff. Time will tell.
