I am trying to find,or decide the way to go about replacing the grounding orb or anode on this model boat.

The fuel tank grounding disc is NOT an anode. It is a ground plate that merely grounds the fuel tank the sea to dissipate any static electricity and prevent a spark.
Boston Whaler's current practice is to ground the fuel tank the negative terminal of the battery. Because the battery ground is solidly connected to the motor which is immersed in the water, this serves the same function.

The tank will have a capacity of 40 gals.

Thanks Tom, I will do the same on my 1979 Revenge. I wondered about the seal around that plate so I planned on purchasing a new plate and sealing it up this Spring. The existing plate is covered so heavily with bottom paint, I can't imagine it would be very effective anyway.
Now I'll forget about the new plate and simply rewire the ground. Do you think it will be difficult to remove the old plate after all these years or should it pop out/pry off with some mild to moderate incentive? Should I just leave it in place and not worry about it?

There is a single Phillips head screw in the center of the disc. Try using a utility knife to clean out the grooves. Make sure you use the correct size Phillips head driver so you don't strip it.

Thanks Phil. What would you recommend I use to fill the residual hole in the transom? Not that there are not about 20+ screw holes there already but with the exception of the transom drain and the engine mount holes, this will be the only one that goes all the way through the transom.

Any paint on the grounding disc (or an anode, for that matter) will render it useless. The metal MUST be fully exposed to sea water to work.

Joe, appreciate the reminder of the article. I read that a couple weeks ago and already forgot about it. How did I get so old and forgetful so fast?  Your transom before the repairs makes mine look pretty good as is. Hope my results look half as good. Any reccomendations for a good place to buy acetone to remove the bottom paint and how much would you start with?
