Wondering what the console (steering wheel) height difference is between the Newport and the Montauk?

It's quite a difference. While some will tell you that you can drive Newport while standing up, I can not do it comfortably and I am 6'-1"
If you install a (rather tall) surface mount Teleflex SeaStar helm on the Newport console, it helps.

Thanks for that tip. I will check into it.
Would you have any opinion on how practical or feasible it would be to build a frame or platform under the stock Newport console (i.e. raising it up)? If feasible it would make standing more comfortable and also create more console storage area. thoughts?

Depending on your talents the sky is the limit. Others have raised the console by using beautifully finished blocks of six inch mahogany.

Sounds like you really want a Montauk console.
These show up on eBay and other classified sites from time to time.
Keep your eyes open.
See this members personal page where he added the Montauk/Outrage center console.

Agreed. The Montauk console in a Newport was quite popular. At least one Whaler dealer special ordered Newports with the Montauk console as a regular business practice. These hybrid boats are popularly called Newtauks.
The fiberglass shell of the Montauk console is still available through any Whaler dealer. You could transfer the controls and gauges from your Newport console and away you go.

There is a Whaler Central member named Jeff from Central Florida who had an original unused Montauk console (just the console, no hardware) for sale in the Whaler parts for sale section dated to circa Aug 2012. His call sign is Yiger. As of Sep 2013, he still had it.

I do still have it. It is Desert Tan and uncut with no holes. It is factory made by Whaler.
Shoot me an email if you are interested.

The Montauk had at least 4 different consoles. The height of the top of the steering wheel on a 1979 Montauk (all original console) is 37 inches.
