Hi - tried searching and have been unable to find info on this.

? how many different (driver / rear ) seating options did the Newport 17 have available ?

Most pictures that I'm finding online seem to show an RPS type seat. However I recently saw a Newport that had two double/sided fold down type seats. So a cluster of seats for four. Kind of like the seats you used to see in runabout in the 70's/80's, but next to each other in a cluster. They appeared to be original.

Any idea if this setup was stock or a stock option?

How many different seating options were there?

Any complications with changing to a RPS type seat?

What you saw is not original. The RPS was the only seat used.

I've been reading lots of posts about newports lately, came across this one that a guy (I think) is referring to the rear seats that I was wondering about. Unfortunately the link to pic is a dead link, but here is what he said (post off of the 'other forum'):

just wondering if anyone may be familiar with or have info about this possible option?

--------------------------------------------------------------

The second is a 1984 Newport with a 1998 Yamaha 90 and an '02-ish LoadMastertrailer. I have seen this boat in person, and it has some crazing, and the gel coat on the bottom right chine at the back has been chipped off down to the green glass (but don't think that there is water intrusion). This boat does have the rare four-man seat in the back. There are rust stains around the stanchions, and the windshield is missing at both the helm and the bow. The link for that is here: http://seelsoutboard.com/used-boats/?inv_action=detail&inventory_id=31 . I plan to start around $7K, but what would be a final good price? This one is for me and Joy for use in about the same areas, but we are interested in this boat because of the availability of sandbars and beaches to stop and beach on (with our four Chihuahua-Daschund fur-babies.

And thanks to you all in advance for your advice.

The 4 Man Seat was an option on several of the 17' models including the Newport.
$1,158.00 in 1984

As a Special note:
The Montauk and Newport also had a "Swivel Seat" option.

You could also have ordered an Igloo cooler seat too, but you never see these options on the Newport because the RPS provides space for the fuel tank(s) which the other optional seats do not.

The Fourman Seat in a Newport would be VERY tight; I have never actually seen that seat in Newport.

Tom,

The price lists states there is room under the 4 man seat for fuel tanks.

I have never seen one in person but a member here shows one in their personal page.

Yes, the Four-man Seat has room for the fuel tanks, but like I said, it would be a tight fit in a Newport. The Four-man seat works in larger boats. Royce has one in his Outrage 18 and it works well in that boat because there is lots of room.

At any rate, what laterongc describes are "sleeper seats" like those found in innumerable runabouts. I am sure somebody added these to whatever boat he is looking at; they are not Whaler seats.

...and speaking of tight fits, check out the Newport shown in the 1978 and 1979 Boston Whaler catalogs. They show the Newport with the Igloo cooler seat substituted for the RPS and the stern deck with Ski Pylon/Pedestal Seat as well.

In this configuration the stern deck houses the fuel tanks.

Tom,

Royce actually has the Commercial series Leaning post and rear facing seat combination.
http://www.whalercentral.com/infusion...user_id=45

His seat is shown in the 1987 commercial boats on page 5 in the 17' Guardian "Dive Boat Package".
Also on page 24, it shows the "Leaning Post/Aft Seat Combination" that Royce has and also says it fits other models.

I will look for the Four Man Seat that a member has in his Montauk.
This time I am going to save those photos from his personal page when I find it.

Yeah, you're right about Royce's boat. But somebody we know has the Four-man seat in their Outrage. I'll find it...

Found it.

Four Man Seat in a 1979 Montauk 17'.
http://www.whalercentral.com/infusion...r_id=17934

I used to put a 94qt cooler behind the RPS which would make the overall size very similar to the size of the Four Man Seat.
