I have a 1966 Sport with a 1988 25hp Yamaha. I got an all new interior and redid the Cable & Pulley system. It started out nice, but the helm which is made out of plastic has failed miserably. I want to switch to the Teleflex Rotary system but not exactly sure which to get. There is a quick connect and the no feedback types. Don't really care which one but need to know which is best. I measured and came out to 92" on the short end and 96" using right angles. The motor has the connect that goes through the tilt. Take a look at the pics and help me. Do I also need a stand-off bracket?

Thanks
Ed

IMG does not work in the forum areas.

Either system from Teleflex works good.
Many members do however choose the No-Feedback system.

For a 25 HP motor on a Sport 13, just buy a basic Teleflex Safe-T system. You can the whole kit for $100 though you also need to buy an optional 20 degree bezel so the steering wheel is not totally flat.

Yes, you will need a stand-off which adds to the cost.

Ed,

Here are two options beside the standoff bracket
http://www.whalercentral.com/infusion...er_id=7367

or these that mount to the mounting bolts of the engine and move the tilt tube forward.
http://www.trmarine.com/cat.htmlm/cat.html
go to the steering and mounting page and look at the front mount kits. Probably have to call them to confirm

Update: I hope this helps future people who are installing the Cable to replace the cable & pulley steering.

I removed the entire console from the boat because the steering wheel was corroded to the helm. I cut the bolt and was able to remove the steering wheel from the console and hammer out the rest of the bolt that was stuck in the wheel.

I was thinking that I would follow Kamie's guidance and get the tilt tube extension from TRMarine. I ordered the cable kit before calling TRMarine which was the first mistake. They did not have the right tube for my Yamaha engine and I certainly could not fabricate one like the one in Glsucoha's Personal Page. My next option is to get the Stand off clamp bracket so I ordered it from Black Bear. I was about to install it but I realized the clamp was bigger than the cable. After finally getting through to the only person at Teleflex (now Sea Star Solutions) that knows this stuff, he told me that I also need the support tube. That is now on order! I also have to order the 8' cable kit.

This is what I learned:

If you are going to get one of the tilt tube extension kits like Kamie suggested then the 9' cable (SS13709) would be correct. If you go the stand off bracket or the clamp bracket the 8' cable (SS13709) is correct. When installing the helm make sure you measure where to put the template for the hole. I just laid it over the existing hole and went to town with the jig saw. I was 1/2 inch off so I had to saw more off on one side. Luckily the bezel covered the entire hole.

Below are the parts that are needed and the best prices that I could find:

8' Teleflex Cable Kit ($99): http://www.blackbearsportinggoods.com...s13708.htm
20 Degree Bezel ($27): http://www.blackbearsportinggoods.com...LESB27483P
Clamp Block Stand-Off Bracket ($83 Painted or $115 Stainless): http://www.westmarine.com/teleflex--c...82_002_502
Support Tube ($25-Aluminum or $68-Stainless) http://www.westmarine.com/teleflex--s...84_003_506
Clevis Kit - Connects cable to tiller ($40) http://www.westmarine.com/mechanical-...it--289884

So for a total of $340 for switching to Teleflex in my mind is worth it!

Spent about 45 minutes installing everything this weekend and WHAT A DIFFERENCE! very easy to turn, looks good and very little or no maintenance. Should have done this from the start!
