I tried searching but didn't find a clear answer. I just need a link or name of what caulk to use to re-seal the spaces between the deck plate.

I bought some plain white to try on one section and it looks bad. Also, you think 2 tubes is enough to seal around the whole deck? (18' outrage)

GE brand in Almond color looks good and is a recommended substitute for the original.
I have forgotten what brand and actual color the original was.

Starbrite makes a silicone deck sealant in light beige and almond specifically formulated for marine use on fiberglass. I've never used it and I know the common thought is no silicone for our boats. Anyone have experience with the product? I don't think the GE II line has the acetic acid but I know most (if not all) common silicone sealants will make it very difficult to reseal the area again if needed.

Life-Calk has been my stand-by product in the past but as far as matching the BW color, not so much.

OSI Quad Caulk, color 004, i believe is the current color of choice, you will most likely have to order it, unless there is a contractor type supply close to you.

OSI Quad Caulk here too. They have a few good colors depending on the vintage and how faded your deck is. I find the OSI hard to come by so any color that's even close is okay for me.

Thanks, both GE and OSI show home depot as a dealer, so I'm going to make a trip and check.

.. and now I see why my search wasn't turning up too much. Thanks for fixing my spelling Joe Smile

You do NOT want to use Quad. That stuff never really fully sets up and stays tacky which makes to great for sealing things like siding, doors and windows, but it would nor be good for sealing the seams in the deck of a Boston Whaler.

Many Boston Whalers had the fuel tank cover sealed at the factory with silicone caulk. My 1983 Outrage 18 had clear silicone. My 1988 Revenge 25 was sealed at the factory with tan polyurethane caulk.

The only non silicone stuff in the right color at Home Depot I could find was Loctite Polyseamseal.

Does that seem OK?

Do not use Polyseamseal (which I love and use for a lot of other uses). It gets too hard in the long run and is not UV stabilized.

The Home Despot sells several polyurethane caulks.

You will have to order directly from Starbrite, but it is worth the effort. Their light beige silicone worked well for me. My boat has minor fading, and this color was still a little light, but after a couple of weeks, it looks great. Their almond may be a better match, but I was afraid it would be to dark.

So glad I have you guys as a resource. How long after applying silicone should I wait before taking it out?

Oops, I was sent the OSI Quad Caulk by Twin Cities Marine. It was a great color match for 1984 Outrage 22, but now I worry about how good the seal is. Maybe we should let Twin Cities know they're shipping bad stuff.

It cures quickly, so I guess you would be okay in 24 hours. Just be careful of it for a week or so.

I don't think you need to worry about how well the caulking seals the gap. The caulking is pretty much just for looks. Water will get into the tank cavity no matter how well the caulking holds up!

Mike, which marina due you drop your trailer into? I usually go Oceanside due to proximity, once the fishing starts I'll go south.

While I would be the first to agree that the tank installation on the Outrage has flaws, the main one being that the poured foam would not absorb water or leak, to say that caulking the cover is unimportant is simply not true. It's the first place water will enter the tank cavity. Keeping this seam water tight is the easiest thing everyone who owns one of these wonderful boats can do to try and keep the boats tank cavity dry, which will prolong the life of the tank.

Ok, I took that other stuff back and found some of that GE Almond.

Sebastian: Same here, Oceanside is only about 35 miles, but I'll go down to Dana Landing as well (about 60 mi). Only been out a handful of times so far with my boat.

I also kayak fish out of La Jolla (and the others I mentioned) ... but that has taken a back seat for now since I got my Outrage.

TacoHunter, we must have the same issues. I was just about to ask the same question when I saw yours about the Deck Caulk. I am fixing up my first boat a 1986 Outrage 18' and the old caulk seems to have seen better days and I wanted to replace it. Let me know how that GE Almond works out for you. I hope to be on the water in 2 weeks but the trailer needs work too now. Thank God my engine is brand new and still under warranty.

And let me know how many tubes you needed.

Thanks,
Todd

Hi Todd, I just finished and 1 tube was enough, but they're only 5 bucks so I got 2.

I taped it off with painters tape, did 1 side at a time. I slopped it in there real good, then went over it with a popsicle stick to smooth it out.

Never used a caulk gun before this in my life Smile ... we'll see how it turns out.

I used OSI Quad Caulk the last time I did mine, with no issues. Starbrite no longer makes the correct color, which is why Sue switched to OSI.

CDNWhaler, do you have the color number to the OSI caulk?
