1969 Whaler "trophy" Stick Steer............ [Boats]

My name is Darin Wells, i have been a long time follower of the website, and recently just restored/reworked and 68' model 13 custom, after i was unable to buy the boat which was my grandfathers to restore. My father and i were planning on restoring that boat but were unable to get the gentleman to sell it. well So long story short, about 2 months after i finished the other whaler i bought to restore, and emptied my "boat money stache", the guy has decided he wants to sell it. Now to my grandfathers boat. It is an 1969 model 13' Stick steer trophy. The boat was purchased new by my grandfather in Roanoke VA. The boat is in fair shape. No Damage to the exterior hull. But its in the typical shape you find these 60's-70's models in. Faded, Gel Coats Spidered etc. the boat has never been stored in water, and never been in salt water. Mechanically the motor is OK.... it apparently runs however needs work. More than likely its just sat. its a 74' model 50hp merc, not the original obviously but was also purchased by my grandfather. the boat has been covered most of the time, either with a cover or inside. I feel like because this is a stick steer, its likely a rare boat. Anyone seen one in person. What kind of value would a properly restored stick steer be worth? And if we decided we can't restore this boat bc of money, would anyone be interested? I just dont want my family to lose this boat to someone who will not appreciate it.... Feel free to give me a shout on the im kinda slack on emails, 336-420-0868

Oh yeah........GO PATRIOTS

Thanks Donavon, that answers some of my questions.
How far aft of the gunwhale edge of the bow are the holes drilled for your nav light?
Waterproof covers are not recommended. A good acrylic cover will keep out almost all rain but there is almost always some seepage at seams.

I've had excellent luck with covers made by Carver Industries and sold by Discount Boat Covers. They sell semi-custom covers that are a virtually perfect fit for Whalers with bow and side rails. Customer service is good and they will advise you on the right cover for your application if you call the toll free number. Try carvercovers.com and discountboatcover.com to get the contact numbers.

15 with smoothest ride [Boats]

As discussed recently in the How far back is your seat thread, the position of the seat in the classic 15 is a big plus for the ride you experience. As we all know the best ride in the boat is in the stern. Sitting so far back in the little 15 creates a very smooth ride. Even if it comes out of the water, If you throttle back she will sit down very smooth.

My classic 15 has been the most fun boat to operate of any I have ever owned. It is like driving a sports car on the water. I can not say it is better than the dauntless 15 but I can assure you it will be far better riding than a 13
I can identify with you having had 3 back surgeries before age 46

I would look at the 15 Dauntless. The seating position will be much more comfortable.
The classic 15' hull 76-94 has a much improved ride over the 13' whaler you have. However, They still are pretty light boat, so I would guess the 15' Dauntless or the current 150 models would have a smoothest ride as the hills are about 300# heavier.

Interesting that the weight issue is brought up. When I check the defender web site comparring the etec with the Merc 40 hp, I see that the evinrude is at 250 lbs and the merc is at 227. Still I like the power and less maintenance issues with the 2 vs 4 stroke.

I have a 1969 13' Sport and just got done stripping the hull for restoration. Mine has a white one-piece rubrail that was mounted under the bow light. Hope this answers part of your question.
Thanks![/quote]

I guess they are the most developed outboard engines togheter with Merc Verado.
Etec is the right choise for old Whaler because of weight. Engines of the eightees were all lighter!
With Verado and Honda you may need to reposition all staff on board.
Mike I do not have a clue.
I did not know that inflatables had a soft ride.
I do know that a soft rider is not a characteristic of classic whalers.
I believe that they changed the hull design to improve the ride.
But all things are relative. Is your inflatable a rigid hull?

Water proof boat cover ? [Parts]

I have a 2007 150 Montauk with full side and bow rails. I have tried twice to get a water/rain proof cover but each time I receive what I ordered it does not come close to fitting over the rails even though it's advertised to do that. My two orders were thru iboats.com but different manufacturers.

I have a canvas towing cover made for the boat by BW but it likely won't stand up to days of rain. Does anyone have a good storm/rain cover? Tell me where to find one !!

Usually I store my boat in my barn 25 miles away but we're having a fairly mild winter so far so I've kept it at home for nice days. Once in the barn it'll stay there til later in the Spring.

Thanks for any suggestions.

bow nav light on 1970 13' [Boats]

I am restoring my 1970 13' Sport and have a few question re: the bow nav light and rub rail.
1. Did the 1970 Sport come with a specific rub rail (two piece or one piece / white or black). Any advantages/disadvantages or leanings to either (besides wiring for the lights).
2. The bow nav light that my 13 has is pictured in the below link to my personal page. You can see how the previous owner had cut out the rub rail to make it fit (which I do not want to do again). I have seen pictures of the fixture mounted both over and under the rub rail. Which way is correct? The way my fixture sets now there is no way I could fit a rub rail under it.
3. The second picture in the below link on my personal page shows the under gunwhale backing plates that the bolt goes through to the spindle. It doesnt seem to set right and I am wondering if:
a. the holes were drilled in the wrong places.
b. there is a bushing that I am missing that will make it fit right.
c. I do not have the correct nav bow light fixture for my model whaler.
d. something I havent thought of.
Any suggestions are appreciated.
15 with smoothest ride [Boats]

I presently have a 12 foot inflat. and would like to switch to a used 15 Whaler for use in semi-protected northern ocean use where closely spaced waves in the 1-3 foot range are common. Due to a serious back injury I am looking for the smoothest ride as the number 1 criteria; nothing else really matters. (We have a 70's 13 Classic that has not come out of the garage in 10+ years due to what I find to be a pounding ride)

1) Is it possible to match the ride of an inflatable?
2) Which model and years have the best 15' for the criteria I have set? (It seems that there have been significant changes in hull shapes over the years even within the same model name.)

Thanks!
